March is a fantastic time to refine your fly fishing techniques. The cooler temperatures mean fish, especially trout, are more active in certain areas. This month, I want to share some insights on how to make the most of your fishing trips during this transitional period.
Think About It:
- Focus on deeper pools where fish tend to gather in cooler weather.
- Use
nymphs and streamers that mimic the natural food and prey in these waters.
- Pay attention to the water temperature; it can give you clues about fish behavior.
Last week, I was guiding on the Caney Fork and we encountered a particularly active group of fish. They were unusually active in a stretch of the river that’s typically quiet. I had to change my plan. Let's face it, if we didn't have a plan we wouldn't enough things to change, right? Anyway, it reminded me of the
unpredictability of fly fishing and nature in-general. We all need to be ready for any and everything the fish throw at us on a daily basis. We are always learning. So go out and see what the fish "throw at you".
